This test provides an insight into the way an individual is genetically predisposed, be it for sprint-power or endurance type sports using DNA technology.
What is the ACTN3 gene?
Genes provide instructions for our body; they help to determine our many physical characteristics such as eye colour and height, as well as many aspects of athletic ability. A gene is composed of a chemical code, commonly known as DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA). Cells ‘read’ the DNA instruction in order to make proteins that perform a particular function within the body.
Everyone has two copies of the ACTN3 gene, with one copy inherited from each parent. The ACTN3 gene instructs our body to produce a protein called alpha-actinin-3. This protein contributes to the muscle’s ability to generate forceful, repetitive muscle contraction.
Benefits
Your test results should be seen in the broader context as being one of a number of factors contributing to a person’s sporting success, including genetics, environment, psychology, your training regime and coaching.
